TODAY'S FOOD STORY :
The story of avial and Bhima !!!
Avial is a famous traditional kerala cruisine. It is supposed to have been invented by Bhima (one of the Pandava brothers) during their exile. According to the legend, when Ballav (Bhima's name during this time) assumed his duties as the cook in the kitchen of Virata, he did not know how to cook. One of the first things he did was to chop up many different vegetables, boil them together and top the dish with grated coconut. There are mythological variations. Bheema is said to have prepared Avial, when there were unexpected guests for King Virata and he needed to serve meals for them. There was no sufficient vegetables to cook any single recipe for side dish, so Bheema used what ever available vegetables to make a new dish, which came to know as Avial.

RICE PATHIRI

Ingredients :

Rice flour - 1 cup
water - 1 cup
(Take rice flour and water in 1 : 1 proportion)
Salt - as needed

Method of Preparation :

  1. Boil water in a deep pan with salt.
  2. When the water starts boiling, add the rice flour slowly and keep stirring.
  3. Turn off the stove and cover the pan with a lid.
  4. When the temperature become normal knead the dough as for any other bread. The dough should peel off the hand without sticking to it.
  5. Make even balls of the same size and set aside.
  6. Take one ball, flatten it in a small bowl containing the flour on one side, flip it over and flatten it again.
  7. Place the powdered dough on a marble slab or chappathi block and roll out the dough on all sides evenly, adding flour as needed. (Try to keep it in round shape or you can place a round lid over it and then cut along the circle.)
  8. Heat the pan and place the pathiri. Turn it down when one side is done. Again turn it down when the second side is down and then it will come fluffy.
Serve hot with chicken curry or vegetable curry.
